Oh no! My coils are touching and they have no travel anymore Nope! Fun fact, we apply progressive spring rates on our designs for a few reasons:
Lowering without using softer spring rates
Lowering without compromising on pretension
Lowering without compromising on safety
Lowering without shortening the spring too much
Better handling characteristics
OE-like comfort characteristics
The coils in the first progressive part have less space between them than the second progressive part, when compressed with the weight of the vehicle, this part will become one solid block, making the second progressive part responsible for the spring travel when on the road.
